Step 1

Upload Student Writing

Students or teachers upload writing in any format. Typed text can be pasted directly. Handwritten work can be photographed and uploaded as JPG, PNG, or HEIC. Our OCR technology digitises handwriting with high accuracy, converting it to text for assessment.

Step 2

AI Analyses Against the Rubric

The AI reads the student's writing and evaluates it criterion by criterion against the selected rubric's band-level descriptors. Each criterion is scored independently — the AI considers Audience separately from Spelling, Text Structure separately from Vocabulary. This mirrors how trained human markers assess writing.

Step 3

Criterion-Level Scoring

For each of the 10 criteria, the AI determines which band-level descriptor best matches the student's writing. It applies conservative scoring rules — when a response falls between two levels, the lower score is awarded. This aligns with NAPLAN marking conventions.

Step 4

Evidence-Based Feedback
