Everything you need to know about using WritingGrade.
Getting Started
How do I assess a piece of writing?
Go to the home page, enter the writing prompt (optional), then paste or upload the student's essay. Choose your rubric, year level, and mode, then click "Start Assessment".
Do I need an account?
Yes. Sign in with your Google account to use the service. New accounts receive free credits to get started.
Uploading Writing
Can I upload handwritten essays?
Yes. Switch to the Image tab and upload photos of handwritten work (JPG, PNG, or HEIC). Our AI will transcribe the handwriting automatically using OCR.
Can I upload multiple pages?
Yes. You can upload multiple images for multi-page essays. They will be processed and combined in order.
What if the OCR transcription has errors?
After processing, you can review the extracted text on the results page. Minor OCR errors generally don't affect scoring significantly.
Understanding Scores
How is the writing scored?
Writing is scored against the selected rubric criteria. Each criterion receives an individual score with reasoning. The overall score is the sum of all criteria scores.
What are proficiency levels?
For NAPLAN rubrics, scores map to proficiency levels: "Exceeding", "Strong", "Developing", or "Needs Additional Support", based on the year level.
What is Fast vs Pro mode?
Fast mode gives quick scores with simplified feedback. Pro mode provides detailed scoring with full rubric descriptors, evidence quotes from the essay, and band-level analysis.
Feedback & Improvement
What are Quick Wins?
Quick Wins are prioritised, actionable suggestions the student can apply immediately to improve their writing. They are mapped to specific rubric criteria.
What is the Improved Version?
The AI can generate a revised version of the essay that addresses the feedback while keeping the student's voice. This is a learning tool — not a replacement for student work.
Reports
Can I print or export results?
Yes. Click the "Download Report" button on any assessment result to open a print-friendly report. You can toggle which sections to include and use eco mode for grayscale printing.
Credits
How much does an assessment cost?
Each assessment costs 1 credit. Generating an improved version costs an additional 1 credit.
What happens if an assessment fails?
If an assessment fails due to a system error, your credits are automatically refunded.
Referrals
How do referrals work?
Share your referral code (found on your Account page) with others. When someone redeems your code, you both receive 5 free credits.
Can I use multiple referral codes?
No. Each account can redeem one referral code. You cannot redeem your own code.
